このたびイギリスを拠点とする創造集団・ネオンダンスによる「パズル・クリーチャー」の世界初公演が9月15日&16日の2日間限定で上郷クローブ座にて行われます。同作品は「越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ2018」の注目作品として早くも国内外で話題ですが、「パズル・クリーチャー(Puzzle Creature)」とは荒川修作+マドリン・ギンズの造語であり、その世界観を表す重要なキーワードの一つでもあります。

”私たちは一体だれであり、何の種であるのでしょう? Puzzle creatures to ourselves, 私たちは解明し得ない世界の訪問者なのです” とは、荒川+ギンズによる『建築する身体』の一節です。

この世界に私たちが存在するということは何を意味するのでしょうか。そして、「パズル・クリーチャー」とは??? ネオン・ダンスはこの広範で多様な解釈がなされる問いをテーマに、美しく、魅力溢れる作品を創り、私たちを忘れがたい探査への旅へと誘ってくれることでしょう。

荒川修作+マドリン・ギンズ東京事務所

Introduction

国際的に活動するダンスカンパニーが、アーティストの荒川修作+マドリン・ギンズの世界からインスピレーションを得て制作した舞台作品。立体的な音楽と照明、身体の知覚を刺激する装置で、観客と演者が一つの空間を創り上げる。荒川+ギンズの創造の源であるヘレン・ケラーに倣い、ダンサーたちは日英の手話を駆使し、光と音が言葉でない言語を織りなす。視覚聴覚をはじめ身体的精神的ハンディキャップを持つ鑑賞者もそうでない者も、それぞれの身体で作品を感じつつ、いつの間にか演者との交信・交流がはじまってゆく。

Choreographer:Adrienne Hart

Adrienne initially trained at Swindon Dance, winning a scholarship at the age of 17 to train at London Contemporary Dance School. She now works internationally as a choreographer and as Artistic Director of Neon Dance. Neon Dance is currently resident company at Swindon Dance (2017-19) and Adrienne is part of Sadler’s Wells Summer University programme (2015 – 2018), designed to support mid-career dance artists over a four-year period.

Adrienne has worked in Russia, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Kosovo, USA and Japan. Her work has been commissioned and supported by Arts Council England, British Council, Creative England, The Place, Modern Art Oxford, Glastonbury Festival, Art Front Gallery, DanceXchange and Pavilion Dance South West amongst others.

Performers

Luke Crook

Luke is a freelance dance artist based in London (UK). He trained at London Contemporary Dance School, where he graduated in 2015 with First Class Honours and has performed works by Richard Alston, Didy Veldman, Crystal Pite, and Kerry Nicholls. Luke has performed in works by Pablo Bronstein as well as Holly Blakey, N’da Dance Company, Tavaziva, Hubert Essakow, Fevered Sleep and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance. Recently working with Alexander Whitley Dance Company, Luke has performed a new solo work, Ulysses Awakes in collaboration with the 12 Ensemble and ‘8 Minutes’. Luke joined Neon Dance in 2017.

Mariko Kida

Originally from Osaka, Japan, Mariko is an award winning dance artist who began her professional career in 2002. Mariko has danced with Alberta Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens as first soloist and has danced leading roles in ballets by George Balanchine, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin and many others. Mariko joined The Göteborg Ballet in 2009 and performed Aurora in Mats Ek’s Sleeping Beauty as well as appearing in creations by Alexander Ekman, Fernando Melo, Örjan Andersson and Stijn Celis. She was selected as one of “25 to watch, 2006” by Dance Magazine (USA) and also “Outstanding dancers of the year 2010” by Dance Europe Magazine. Mariko is currently a freelance performer based in Sweden and guest performer with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

Carys Staton

Carys Staton

Carys began her training at Swindon Dance before continuing her studies at the Rambert School where she graduated in 2011 with a first class BA(hons) degree. Upon graduation Carys joined the Russell Maliphant Company for the creation and touring of The Rodin Project (2011-13) and Still Current (2013-15), which merited her an ‘Outstanding Female Performance’ nomination in the Critics Circle Awards 2015 and ConcealReveal (2015-16). Carys has worked commercially with performance credits including Lexus EU and ITV’s ‘An Audience with Beyonce’, as well as dance for film with HungerTV’s and AnOther Magazines, MOVEment series with Sadler’s Wells, as well a choreographically with RSA Films/Black Dog and Tomato.

Carys has been a member of Neon Dance since 2015.

Music:Sebastian Reynolds

Sebastian Reynolds

Sebastian Reynolds is an Oxford based composer and producer, supported by PRS for Music Foundation, British Council and Arts Council England. Sebastian is part of the contemporary music ensemble Solo Collective alongside acclaimed German experimental musicians Anne Müller and Alex Stolze, the trio have performed sold out shows across Europe. They released ‘Solo Collective Part One’ via Nonostar Records in Berlin in December 2016, and Sebastian subsequently released his solo EP Mahajanaka via Nonostar in April 2017.

In 2016, Sebastian researched Jataka Mythology performance traditions in Thailand and went on to realise a collaborative work inspired by the mythology with Neon Dance and the award winning Thai dance artist Pichet Klunchun titled ‘Mahajanaka Dance Drama’. Off the back of this project, he was commissioned by Neon Dance to create an original score for ‘Puzzle Creature’.

Scenography: Numen / For Use

Numen / For Use is a collective working in the fields of conceptual art, scenography, industrial and spatial design. The group first formed in 1998 as a collaborative effort of designers Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljković. Neon Dance commissioned Sven and Ivana Jonke from the award winning collective to create a laser light design for the company’s touring production ‘Empathy’ in 2016. Numen will again join Neon Dance to create a set design concept for ‘Puzzle Creature’.

Costume・props: Ana Rajcevic

Ana Rajcevic is an award­ winning fashion artist, working at the intersections of sculpture and fashion design. After receiving an international MA scholarship from the University of the Arts London in 2010, to attend the prestigious Fashion Artefact course, Ana won the University’s Best Design Award 2012 in London, UK and the Project of the Year Award at International Talent Support in Italy for her “ANIMAL: The Other Side of Evolution” project. Based between London and Berlin, Ana’s work has been exhibited internationally in London, Paris, New York, Rome, Berlin, and in museums and galleries including the Louvre (FR), Smithsonian Design Museum (NYC), Boijmans Museum (NL) and San Jose Museum of Art (CA) among others. Ana has been a regular collaborator with Neon Dance since 2014.

Lighting Design: Nico de Rooij & Djana Covic

Nico de Rooij and Djana Covic are part of the multi-disciplinary and award-winning design studio SIDF, specialising in Scenography, Lighting design, Photography, Architecture, Film, and Performance. SIDF collaborate with internationally renowned Choreographers, Composers and Directors using set, light, sound and image to support the creation of new work. Neon Dance have worked with SIDF since 2010.

Sign language (English): Jemima Hoadley & Deepa Shastri

Jemima initially trained at Laban graduating with First Class BA (HONS) in Dance Theatre. Jemima has danced with CandoCo Dance Company amongst others. In 2004, she was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship for her inclusive work in Quebec, Canada with Corpuscule Danse. Deepa Shastri has extensive experience of working in the cultural sector on various levels for the last 12 years. Past credentials include Associate Producer for Unlimited, as part of London 2012 festival programme and Liverpool’s DaDa Festival. She is creative BSL consultant with specialist knowledge on deaf audiences development and theatre access solutions such as BSL interpretation and captioning.

Sign language (Japanese): Chisato Minamura

Chisato trained at Trinity Laban in London and went on to study for her MA at Yokohama National University. She also has a BA in Japanese Painting. Born in Japan, Chisato is now based in London (UK). Completing her Signing Art Course organised by Tate Museum in 2012, she now delivers art tours in BSL using her skills and experience of art and art history in venues including British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Museums and Whitechapel Gallery.
